Filter your tap water with these 3 systems

Clean water is refreshing to both the mind and body. It’s a vital necessity for all your body’s organs and tissues. However, getting clean water isn’t always easy; In many regions across the globe, including in the United States, clean water is not accessible. Sometimes it’s a luxury.

This is because clean, safe water doesn’t occur everywhere naturally. Even relatively clean natural water still has impurities such as bacteria or too many minerals of one type or another. However, you can get clear, clean, water by using proper water filtering systems in your home.

Why invest in a water filter

As noted above, there are numerous water filtration systems available, but they do not all serve the same purpose. Water filtration systems do more than just ensure water is safe to drink. Many cities and communities take steps to ensure that the water coming out of your faucet is drinkable without requiring additional filtration.

However, this not the same as ensuring that the water you’re drinking is genuinely beneficial, healthy, and without chemicals, sediments, or other impurities that can accumulate in your body over time. Further, over 2100 other known impurities and toxins sometimes slip through into your tap water. While this is not toxic in small doses, many people prefer to go without it.

Water filtration systems for your home

There are various ways to filter water properly, and some are preferred over others depending on which impurities they target. Naturally, the more extensive the filtration system, the more likely it is to cost more.

Activated carbon

Water filters that use carbon trap and strain out chemicals such as pesticides, industrial solvents, and chlorine. Basic filtration models usually don’t have filters that eliminate heavy metals, so if this is a necessity for you, double-check that the one you pick up has these capabilities.

Additionally, regular carbon filters also don’t get rid of limescale (water hardness), microbes, nitrates, sodium, or fluorine.

There are two kinds of activated carbon filters that you can buy: granulated carbon filters and carbon block filters. Granulated carbon filters have a lower surface area due to the small grains of carbon used and are not as effective as carbon block filters. Carbon block filters, in contrast, have a larger surface area and are block-shaped.

You can find some great water pitchers that use carbon filters, which you fill up with tap water and be ready to go.

Reverse osmosis filters

These types of water filtration systems use reverse osmosis, a process where two solutions that are not equal in concentration equalize themselves by passing through a semi-permeable membrane.

Reverse osmosis, as the name suggests, does the opposite of osmosis. Here, water is pushed through a membrane while under pressure in the opposite direction. This process forces water to move from a more concentrated state to a less concentrated one.

Pollutants such as limescale, salt, nitrates, and most other things larger than water molecules are filtered out using this process, as pollutants cannot pass through the membrane. However, bacteria are small enough to pass through the membrane.

These types of systems require greater maintenance and are significantly more expensive than carbon filtration systems. For example, it requires a pressure tank or other charging method to force the water in the opposite direction that it would normally flow. Since they filter out particles larger than the size of a water molecule, they’re generally more thorough than a standard filter.

Ozone filtration systems

Ozone filters are great at killing bacteria and other microorganisms, which can make you sick if ingested. While these systems do not filter out things that these other systems do like chemicals or sediment, you can use some of these systems in tandem to develop a filtration method that works best for you.

The best water filtration systems can easily be installed in your home, purifying and straining out organic compounds, sediments, and chemicals. There are several different types of water filtration systems and devices on the market today, so it’s important to choose what works for you.
