    How to choose viola sizes

Our violas are available in 7 different sizes: 16.5", 16" (also known as full size), 15.5", 15", 14", 13" and 12". 16.5" viola is the biggest and 12" viola is the smallest. Most adults use 16" violas.

To measure what size viola best suits you, you need to know the length between your neck and the middle of your left-hand palm (when your hand is fully extended and raised perpendicular to your body, just like holding a violin). Most of the teachers prefer students to use the length from the neck to the wrist for measurement instead of the neck to mid-palm approach. The viola size determined by the neck/wrist approach would be the size that is more comfortable for students to hold. The viola size determined by the neck/mid-palm approach would be the biggest size students should use.

The following table lists the length of each viola size. Find your length using your preferred approach and use that to determine the size of viola to get.

    The bow makes me upset

    The bow makes me upset
I just got the viola today. The viola sound is not solid as youtube video. The sound rings. But it is ok. I played it with my violin bow(expensive one) because the bow in the case has hairs sticking out and is in bad condition. The bow does not make any sounds and it's too rough to have the rosin on it. This is the worst bow I've ever seen. I need to return the bow and get a new bow.But the viola and the case is in very good shape. And the tuner is working really well.

This viola is a lower price but I think it's perfect for beginners or middle/high school orchestra. It actually sounds really great and the customer service is excellent. This is actually my second Cecilio viola, I had a 16" one a couple of years ago that I barely played and was too big for me. This time around I decided to pick it up again and went down to a 15.5" and it's a good size for me (I played a full size cello in high school a good ten years ago, I don't know how my short arms managed that!). The first 15.5" I received had a crack along the seam on the back of the viola. I contacted the seller and they sent me a replacement at no extra cost and that one is in great condition. It also comes with a tuner/metronome (battery included!), extra strings, and a cleaning cloth.

Very nice viola at a 1/4 the price of the music store in my area. The quality is very good. I was concerned about how it would sound due to price but it has a wonderful tone

We are a family that takes violin lessons and plays together . Have wanted to also pick up viola and cello and guitar. We wanted a student grade but nice sounding viola for us and for friends sometimes who play with us . Fiddlerman had a great you tube video on this viola , and it fits the bill and then some ... Great value, a case, a bridge,Strings ( we will up grade maybe ) a bow, rosin, a fair tuner( we use our piano and another one ) strings. all in one package .... How nice to have a good one here to order that also sounds nice when tuned when the instructions and given suggestions are followed . Our local luthier can adjust the bridge to make the strings easier to play if needed , but I doubt it will be .... easy , fast and saves so much time. If we find we want one that is better than a good student grade, then we can spend more time and $$ for that, but for our level , this is just what we needed . This is a GREAT place to start with a nice sounding instrument at an affordable ,livable price. We bought the higher grade for the ebony fingerboard . Glad . If instruments alone made the music , this would be great !!! Now for the practicing !!!! .

This has been great for my middle schooler until the fingerboard came completely off while he was tuning it. He is in the county orchestra and has 5 songs he needs to rehearse so this is very irritating to have to deal with.

Viola arrived without a sound post. The A and D strings were in the wrong spots. My daughter's Instructor removed the sound bar from her broken viola, installed it in the new viola and switched the strings to correct positions. Now it sounds great and both my daughter and her instructor are happy with it. I'm thankful he was able to salvage the instrument.
