I collect vintage tins and ran out of room to display them on the fridge. I could have stopped collecting, but I’ve never been a quitter. I only needed more magnetic surfaces. So, I bought two sheets of steel, built them onto a wooden frame for support, and covered it with this chalkboard paper.
Originally, I tried chalkboard paint, but it came out with a rough texture (possibly due to using a cheap roller, was not the classic chalkboard green I had hoped for, and it chipped off under my nail, when removing any of the tiny but powerful magnets I use.
I was skeptical about something vinyl, but this arrived better than expected. The color is beautiful, and it’s less messy, less time consuming, and cheaper than paint. I found smoothing with a paint roller, as they suggest, to be useless. My hand worked far better, and although doing it solo, it wasn’t difficult when I got the hang of it.
Applying this to a steel surface, I found it adhesive enough to stay where I wanted it, but not so adhesive that I couldn’t lift and readjust, which takes away the stress of getting it perfect on the first try. Because my surface was not perfectly flat, I did get some small bubbles that couldn’t be smoothed out, such as over the nails that hold the steel to the frame. This ended up not being noticeable though, as who can see bubbles under all those tins? But if you plan on keeping your chalkboard minimalist, any bubbles might be glaring.
I used Sargent chalk, and it was easy wipe clean with only a damp paper towel. I would buy this again, and liked it enough that I put a leftover piece on my fridge.

Installation Tips & Tricks
There are a few things you can do to make sure you get the most out of our self-adhesive chalkboard roll.
Make sure you are applying to a smooth surface that is clean, dry, and free of debris. Ideally, wash the surface and allow it to thoroughly dry before application.
Start the application at one end of your chosen area, smoothing out wrinkles and air bubbles as you go.
Keep your chalkboard clean with any chalkboard cleaner. For stubborn stains, use a minimum 90% solution of rubbing alcohol or peroxide. Avoid wax-based cleaners to help keep it streak-free. Using water to clean has been known to cause smudging and streaks.
Our durable peel and stick chalkboard can be easily removed and reapplied. Peel slowly to prevent tears, stretching, and to leave no residue behind.
