Willow & Everett is a reputable company in my experience. My original review indicated that the kettle made an electric whistling noise, and they immediately sent a replacement. The noise was a fluke and the new kettle is perfectly silent. Thanks!
The following was my original review. I updated it from three to five stars because Willow & Everett contacted me, said my kettle was a lemon, and sent me a new one. The new kettle does NOT have the electric whistling noise and is absolutely perfect. This kettle works well. I really appreciate having temperature options, and a "keep warm" button. The actual temperature comes out a bit lower than what the buttons say. When filled with cold water, it takes maybe 4 or 5 minutes to finish getting up to a boil. As it approaches boiling it seems to cycle the heat on and off a bunch; I'm guessing this has to do with its large size and the need to give the heavy ceramic material time to absorb heat? My only complaint is that somewhere in the electronics there is a cheap component that whistles with the volume pulsing up and down at a few hertz, sounds kind of like a sci fi laser gun sound effect. The sound is there even when it's turned off (but is louder and changes frequency when the button lights are on or the heating element is on). This makes me nervous to leave it plugged in. Some asking around has led me to conclude that there's a cheaply made capacitor somewhere in the electronics. I don't think it's a fire hazard, and I don't think it draws much current - just annoying.
First, it looks amazing. The ceramic is thick, heavy, and the glaze is perfect. I never gave much thought to how my previous kettle looked, it was just a utilitarian appliance, but having this as a comparison really makes me appreciate how attractive it is and it really classes up my counter! The water heats well and quickly, considering I use cold water and this is quite large. I love having temperature options for different kinds of coffee and tea, and the "stay warm" feature is quite nice and handy to have. Because this is thick ceramic, it holds temperature MUCH better than my previous metal one, even once the kettle is off. And very important: it pours really well with NO DRIPS!
Highly recommend this!
There was no warning in the manual at all that this could happen, and I could have easily have followed the instructions and set it going with the spout pointed out (so steam didn’t damage the cupboards and walls above, something the manual does warn about) while my two-year-old played in the kitchen beside me. The danger of a boiling vinegar fountain spouting over the counter with children around is the reason I’m posting this review (the first review for a product I’ve ever posted).
I rinsed the pot and refilled to the max line with only clean water. That time there was no fountain, but still a fair amount of pressure buildup, with drips of water spurting out the top around the lid. I then filled it to halfway up the base of the spout, and there was still boiling water spurting out of the spout.
The spurting may be something you decide to live with, but the instructions regarding FILLING the pot with the vinegar solution with NO WARNING that it could even overflow, let alone so explosively out of the spout is very dangerous even for adults, let alone in homes with small children. If you do buy this kettle, be extremely cautious during the cleaning procedure.
On a side note, one concern I had when I first took the kettle out of the box was a very strong chemical smell inside. After my (3) vinegar boiling adventures, the smell seems to be gone.
